Helping Someone Settle into Care: A First-Week Family Checklist

Moving a loved one into a care home is a significant emotional transition for everyone involved. The first week is critical for setting the tone, establishing routines, and building trust between the resident, the family, and the care team.

A planned, thoughtful approach can alleviate anxiety and help your loved one feel secure and at home more quickly. Here is a practical checklist to guide you through those crucial first days.

1. Personalizing the Space

Making their new room feel familiar is essential for comfort and orientation.

  • Familiar items: Bring favorite photographs, a cherished blanket, or a comfortable armchair from home.
  • Smells and sounds: Familiar scents (like a specific lotion or room spray) and a radio tuned to their favorite station can be very reassuring.
  • Clear layout: Ensure items they use daily, like glasses, books, or the television remote, are easily accessible.

A room that reflects a person's history and personality instantly feels safer and more welcoming than a clinical space.

2. Communicating with the Care Team

The care staff want to know your loved one as an individual, not just a resident. The more information you provide, the better care they can deliver.

  • Share the 'Life Story': Provide a brief summary of their background, former occupation, hobbies, likes, and dislikes.
  • Discuss routines: If they always have a cup of tea at 3 PM or prefer to shower in the evenings, let the staff know.
  • Establish a contact point: Agree on who will be the primary point of contact for updates and how often you will communicate.

3. Establishing a Visiting Routine

Visits are vital, but finding the right balance early on is important.

  • Initial visits: Keep the first few visits relatively short and positive. Focus on the present environment and new activities.
  • Consistency: Try to establish a predictable visiting pattern so they know when to expect you.
  • Encourage independence: Allow staff the time and space to bond with your loved one. It's healthy for them to form new relationships within the home.

4. Practice Patience

Remember that adjustment takes time. It is completely normal for there to be a period of disorientation or distress. Trust the process, maintain open communication with the care team, and give your loved one the grace and time they need to settle into their new home.
